ESALA POYA

Esala Poya is a significant days in the Buddhist. This poya marks the day when Prince Siddhartha was conceived by Queen Mahamaya. It also marks the day he renounced worldly pleasures and fortune to become an ascetic in search of the ‘Truth’. On this day we also remember when the Buddha preached his first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. Finally, he went to Thusitha heaven and preached the Abhidhamma to his mother. All of this is said to have happened on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day.
Esala Poya also heralds the Vas period. Lord Buddha stipulated the tradition of vas or a retreat period to keep the monks from having to travel during the rainy season. Consequently, monks observed a three-month period of retreat during the rainy season. Begins after the full moon day of July and ends in October. In Sri Lanka, King Dutugemunu picked Esala Poya Day to lay the foundation for the dagoba the Mahastupa or the Ruwanvelisaya and its enshrinement of relics. On an Esala Full Moon Poya day the Buddha Sasana was established in the country during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.
It was also on an Esala Poya day in 1753 the great revival or a Theravada Buddhist Reformation of the Maha Sangha took place at the Kandy Pushparama Maha Vihare (better known as the Malwatte Temple). Esala Poya also marks the start of the procession season. Kandy Perahera, Ruhunu-Katharagama Perahera and Rathnapura Saman Devale Perahera are some of the more famous one. These processions are essentially connected with deities, either to invoke their blessings or to give thanks to them for favours received. Typically, the Kandy Perhara starts several days after the Esala poya and ends with the Nikini poya.
