ELEPHANTS

E lephants are quite large animals.  They have four legs which resemble large pillars. They have two ears which are like big fans. Elephants have a special body part which is their trunk. In addition, they have a short tail. The male elephant has two teeth which are quite long and are referred to as tusks. Elephants are herbivorous and feed on leaves, plants, grains, fruits and more. They are mostly found in Africa and Asia. THE KANDY PERAHERA

The Kandy Perahera or the Esala Perahera is one of Sri Lanka’s foremost religious celebrations. It has been recorded that the Perahera was held each year since the arrival of Buddha’s tooth relic to Sri Lanka. The Kandy Perahera is an elegant procession or parade that flaunts the various talents of the Kandyan people. The procession begins with the whip crackers announcing the commencement of the event. A group of men strategically crack their coir whips onto the ground to create a spark and notify the crowds about the beginning of the parade. ESALA POYA

Esala Poya is a significant days in the Buddhist.   This poya marks the day when Prince Siddhartha was conceived by Queen Mahamaya. It also marks the day he renounced worldly pleasures and fortune to become an ascetic in search of the ‘Truth’. On this day we also remember when the Buddha preached his first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta. Finally, he went to Thusitha heaven and preached the Abhidhamma to his mother.  All of this is said to have happened on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day. Esala Poya also heralds the Vas period. Lord Buddha stipulated the tradition of vas or a retreat period to keep the monks from having to travel during the rainy season.   Poverty affects the life of a poor family. A poor person is not able to take proper food & nutrition &his capacity to work reduces. Reduced capacity to work further reduces his income, making him poorer. Children from poor family never get proper schooling & proper nutrition. They have to work to support their family & this destroys their childhood. Some of them may also involve in crimes like theft, murder, robbery, etc. A poor person remains uneducated & is forced to live under unhygienic conditions in slums. There are no proper sanitation & drinking water facility in slums & he falls ill often &  his health deteriorates. A poor person generally dies an early death. So, all social evils are related to poverty. Poverty is a social evil, we can also contribute to control it. For example- we can simply donate old clothes to poor people, we can also sponsor the education of a poor child or we can utilize our free time by teaching poor students. ...
